Breast augmentation surgery

Breast augmentation procedures have now become quite common, especially in the United States. Reasons why women choose to go through with it can differ from person to person. Mostly, they go with it because of underdeveloped breasts, changes in size or shape after pregnancy or breast feeding or difference in the sizes of the breasts. Some women experience a change in size or shape of the breast after weight loss or changing and some women just want their breasts made fuller. All these reasons may lead a woman to go for a breast implant surgery. Being a candidate for a breast augmentation surgery may include the conditions such as; having a feeling that your breasts are too small to look good in a swim suit, your breasts have lost the firmness or fullness after weight loss or childbirth, changes in size and shape, and one of your breasts is smaller than the other one. Make sure that the results that you want to achieve after the surgery are realistic enough for the surgeon to achieve. Make a list of questions you would ask him before going for a procedure including the risk factors, and do not forget to mention what results you are looking forward to.

When you visit your surgeon, do remember to take all your previous medical files and reports along so they could also be discussed before the procedure. Also, do mention if you have any drug allergies or you are on any kind of treatment already. The surgeon might also take some photographs to keep a breast augmentation before and after records.

It is very important that you tell your surgeon if you plan to reduce some weight or planning a pregnancy so the surgery requirements could be discussed thoroughly. Breast augmentations require mammogram examinations to ensure what future changes in your breast structure are expected. Smoking and some medication that cause bleeding should be avoided as suggested by the surgeon.

Usually local anesthesia or intravenous sedation is used to perform the surgery, but if desired by someone, general anesthesia can also be used provided it is alright to use it on the patient undergoing the surgery. After breast augmentation has been performed, you will be closely monitored for a few hours to ensure stability of your overall health.

After the surgery, surgeons usually recommend that you go on with your daily routine schedule after two days of recovery. Dressings or any kind of bandages are removed after several days of surgery. You will have to wear a support bra for quite some days after the dressings have been removed.

Don’t be alarmed if some discoloration or swelling is noticed after the dressing is removed. It is pretty normal to swell up as it is a part of the healing process. After the breast augmentation procedure has been performed, make sure someone is there to take you home and stay over night to ensure you recover well.
